If you're looking for a great diaper cake pattern, you've come to the right place. Diaper cakes are all the rage in baby showers these days and well they should be. Not only do these cakes make spectacular centerpieces, they are also very practical gifts for the guest of honor to bring home.

You can find a generic diaper cake pattern by doing a simply search online, keep in mind however that not all of these patterns are created equal and you need a road map in order to understand many of them. There are actually several different patterns and designs around.

In fact, I recommend choosing which type of cake design you wish to use from the many different designs before you even contemplate beginning. With so many options available. Do you want one tier, two, three, or four? There are designs and patterns available for each of these parameters.

In addition to a pattern, you may want to have handy the ?decorations? you wish to use on your ?cake?. Some people prefer to use flowers and ribbons, some of the best I've found, however, utilize baby toys, receiving blankets, burping towels, and the like to ?finish? off the look.

The best diaper cake pattern I've found was for a three-tiered cake. This particular pattern recommends 120 diapers of the same brand, size (I recommend size 1 since these will be opened and can't be returned if for some reason the baby is too big for newborn sized diapers), and pattern. Different patterns and even different sizes of the same brand will provide an inconsistent pattern in the ?cake?, a paper towel roll, and 6-8 yards of ribbon that is 2 inches wide, 3 cake pans: 1 12?, 1 14?, and 1 16?, additionally, you will need large rubber bands to hold the diapers in place and a ?base? to put the cake on (a piece of stiff cardboard will work well for this you can use the 16? cake pan as a guide for making the base).

According pattern, it's a good idea to place the diapers inside the cake pan in order to keep them from flying all over the place while you're working on them. Begin the cake by placing one diaper inside the pan sideways with the top of the diaper near the center of the cake pan. You will want all the diapers facing the same way in order to keep the pattern consistent. Once you have the pan as full as it will go (it should look a lot like a circular saw (or buzz saw) blade from the top. Secure the form you have created with a couple of rubber bands (using more than one prevents a heart break if for some reason the first one pops).

This is where it may get a little tricky. You use the 14? cake pan for the second layer. After you've completed the second layer and tied the ribbon tightly around the outside of the layer, you will want to insert the paper towel holder in the center. This will keep the layers from sliding all over the place. Once you've completed this, you have the final layer to do and the decorating. The entire process should take a couple of hours and can be a great deal of fun for you creative geniuses out there.

A note to remember with any diaper cake pattern is that there is no one right or wrong way to build or decorate your cake. Use your imagination, have fun, and be creative. There are also other ways to make creative cakes for baby showers.
